Meeting New People - The Art of Remembering Names.

I am often asked for tips on how to remember names when meeting someone for the first time. It can be particularly hard when you are meeting numerous new people at one event.

The best thing to do is slow down and focus. By this I mean, listen. Often times we are busy rehearsing in our head what we want to say next in an attempt to make a good impression. But you will make a better impression by being present in the conversation by listening.

Once someone introduces themselves immediately repeat back their name, “It’s nice to meet you, Sara.” Then try to say the person’s name an additional time or two during the conversation so that you reinforce it in your mind. However, if you pepper the conversation with the continuous mention of their name they will think you are a bit off – best not to do that.

As you mentally file away their name in your memory, try to associate their name with an adjective that suits your first impression of that person – Funny Frank, Cool Claire, etc. I also like to visually spell out their name in my mind. When finishing the conversation say, “It was so nice to meet you, Sara. I hope our paths cross again soon.” This helps cement their name one last time before parting ways. If appropriate, ask for their business card. Let us know if you have a tip you would like to share.

Be marvelously well-mannered and work on remembering names of new people you meet along the way. Possessing this skill will improve your personal brand.

Have a marvelous week – Catherine
